One of the tour’s first stops is next Wednesday, August 17th, at the Carlsbad Village Theater in San Diego, CA. If you’re in the SoCal area this is a show you can’t miss with special guest appearances by Steph Davis and Chris Sharma! So dreamy!

Hi it’s Chuck again.

I had the opportunity to join Pete Mortimer and the crew from Sender Films in Moab for a fast-paced shoot over the last couple weeks. While there, we had the chance to hang with the Moab Monkeys and their ring leader Andy Lewis, who is on a quest to be the first person to land a backflip on a highline.  Andy is considered the leader in the emerging sport of slackline, which is gaining popularity and even has a world cup competition season to support the growing culture. While in Brixen filming for The Scene last year, I filmed Andy landing several backflips on a slackline but I never had the chance to meet him in person. He’s a great character, and after hanging out with him for several days in the desert I was sad to leave Moab and return home.

Andy and his friends are basically operating on the periphery of climbing culture. They still go out to Indian Creek. They climb desert towers and talk trash about bouldering like any true Moab resident should, but they all have equal passion for stringing nylon across various spans like some sort of spider/ human cross-breed. What they do with the webbing varies once it’s strung. Sometimes they walk it, sometimes they BASE jump off it, sometimes they rig huge rope swings. I had the chance to take the Red “One on quite a ride. I jumped into a 160-foot chasm with the camera rolling to try to get a POV shot for the film. Not sure if they’ll use any of the footage, but at least it’s there.

The most amazing part about the desert is the landscape. In many ways, the activities of the crazy people in Moab are very natural to the shape of the environment where they live. BASE jumping sounds like the craziest thing in the world until you see the spacious, beautiful exit points and tall, vertical cliffs that abound around Moab.

We also spent a day with Steph and Mario, two fixtures in the Moab climbing and BASE scene.

The footage will be part of this year’s Reel Rock Tour, which will be launching in Fall.

It was a great time in the desert documenting some wonderful characters. Cheers from a comfy office chair!
